Who’s cooking: Helen Schnelzer, co-chairwoman of Threads of Blessing, a ministry of the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas that works with women of Uganda to create and sell their needlework. Helen’s husband, Garry, is a retired Air Force major general who works as a consultant on military space programs. The couple has two children and four grandchildren.

What’s cooking: The daughter of a good cook, Helen began throwing dinner parties for friends in her native Australia when she was 18. “It comes easily,” she says. She enjoys putting together spontaneous dinners for friends.
